With a motorhome, you can enjoy the freedom of the road and choose any direction to head to during your next motorhome holiday trip! In this article, Touring Cars has thoroughly planned and developed a route for the North Coast 500 that you can take for your next motorhome adventure.

The North Coast 500 (NC500) is a 516-mile (831 km) scenic route around the northern coast of Scotland that starts and ends in Inverness. It offers breathtaking views of Scotland’s marvellous landmarks and untouched natural beauty, which you have the chance to experience when booking a motorhome adventure from our Glasgow/Edinburgh rental station.

The Scottish Highlands, offering unique experiences and stunning views in all seasons, can be visited throughout the year. However, please take precaution and pack some warm clothes as Scottish weather can be unpredictable.

We recommend booking spots from camping grounds well in advance when planning to travel during the high season (June-August) as they fill up quickly during this time. For more information regarding camping grounds, you can visit: Caravan and Motorhome Club and The Camping and Caravanning Club.

Day 1 (Approx. 168 miles/274 km)

Arriving to our Glasgow/Edinburgh rental station.

Upon your arrival to Glasgow airport (GLA) or Edinburgh airport (EDI), our customer service representative will greet you and provide a transfer directly to our rental station. At the rental station, our professional personnel will provide personal orientation with a motorhome. After the familiarisation process, you will be ready to start your adventurous journey in Scotland!

Heading to the capital of the Scottish Highlands – Inverness

Inverness – the starting point of the North Coast 500 route is located 70 miles (113 km) from our rental station. After you receive keys to your premium motorhome, you should be able to reach Inverness in under 4 hours.

We recommend staying and exploring the city until the next morning before continuing your road trip. In the heart of the city you will be able to spot the Inverness Castle that looks as if it is from a fairy tale and visit its panorama tower which offers a 360-degree city overview. Do not forget to stop by the Inverness Cathedral or the Victorian Market. End your day with a relaxing stroll along the River Ness.

The Loch Ness Monster: Fact or Fiction?

If you have extra time to spend in the Inverness surroundings, we advise visiting Loch Ness located just a 30-minute ride from the Inverness. You may have heard about the Loch Ness Monster – a mythical monster, that received a worldwide attention in 1933 and has since been a national sight to see for tourists coming to this region from all over the world. So, if you are interested in discovering the truth behind this mythical story, or even trying to spot the Loch Ness Monster in the lake, do not hesitate to give this spot a visit!

Day 2 (Approx. 70 miles/113 km)

Spot dolphins from the Black Isle

After relaxing and enjoying the atmosphere of the city life, it is time to hit the road again! Whilst we hope that you will get to experience the entire beauty which the North Coast 500 has to offer, there are some places we want to highlight that are by the official route. One of them being the Black Isle.

The Black Isle is a peninsula located 30 minutes away from Inverness

During your visit, you can spend your whole afternoon enjoying the tranquil atmosphere of it. We recommend first visiting the town of Fortrose, where you can park your motorhome before heading to the city centre to see ruins of the Fortrose Cathedral. Afterwards, you can walk towards the Fairy Glen waterfalls to marvel at impressive waterfalls surrounded by green scenery. Stroll along the Rosemarkie beach and spot bottlenose dolphins that live in the waters of Moray firth by either reaching the Chanonry point or by taking a private boat tour from Cromarty town.

Visit a prominent place featured in Harry Potter and the Goblet Fire

After spending your afternoon at the beautiful Black Isle, you can hit the road again to enjoy unparalleled views whilst driving through seaboard villages and hidden gems such as Dingwall and Evanton. Stop at Evanton to take a break from driving, stretch your legs and walk to the Flyrish monument located on a hill. At this height you can experience the stunning views Easter Ross has to offer and even visit the Black Rock George – a narrow canyon which was featured in Goblet Fire, a Harry Potter movie. Then continue your journey to Invergordon and Portmahomack.

Taste Scottish cuisine

Park at a camping ground in Portmahomack for the night and enjoy your evening by visiting a local restaurant to experience national Scottish cuisine. Order Haggis or Scottish and please your sweet tooth with a dessert such as sticky toffee pudding or shortbread.

Day 3 (Approx. 70 miles/113 km)

A trip to the Sutherland county

Start your day with a traditional Scottish breakfast from one of the local restaurants close to the camping grounds. Then continue your journey towards Sutherland county which makes up a large part of the North Coast 500 route. It offers awe-inspiring scenery with its scattered fishing communities, peaceful harbours and fairy tale looking castles.

Immerse yourself into the fairy tale atmosphere

With a 40-minute drive from Portmahomack you can reach the Golspie village. Park your motorhome and head to the fairy tale like Dunrobin castle. A hike through the forest area of Big Burn is perfect for when travelling with a dog.

A goodnight’s sleep by the sea breeze

After a short exploration of a Golspie surroundings, you can set off towards the Brora beach to watch sea wildlife and continue your journey towards Helmsdale – a fishing port with a picturesque harbour. Drive towards Lybster, located in the Northern British county Caithness, which offers vast open landscapes and spend a night at one of the beautiful camping grounds there.

Day 4 (Approx. 80 miles/129 km)

Whale watching at Duncansby Head

Start your day off right with a refreshing morning walk along the beach of Lybster. Then head off towards Wick, a town located only 20 minutes away, which is known for having been the busiest herring port of Europe in the mid-19th century. Do not miss the remains of the castle of Old Wick and the castle of Sinclair Girnigoe, that reside on the edge of a cliff, overlooking the sea.

If you are a golf fanatic or otherwise enthusiastic to golf on your holiday, make a reservation at the Wick Golf Club before starting on your road trip around the North Coast 500. Wick Golf Club is located right at the coast, providing astounding views over the sea. Marvel at the stunning scenery whilst spending time with your loved ones golfing.

After a day spent in Wick, find a change of scenery by travelling to Duncansby head. There, you can spot majestic whales and other sea creatures in the water whilst strolling on cliff edges that offer beautiful views of the sea.

Surf the North Coast

Once you feel ready to move on from Duncasby Head, begin your journey towards the most northern point of mainland Britain, Dunnet Bay. It is a location you will look back at in awe, so do not forget to take photos to show your family when you get back home. Marvel at the coastal grassland from Dunnet Bay’s viewing point and hope that you will spot the indigenous habitants – puffins!

Dunnet beach is a surfer’s dream – bring your own board or rent from a surfing shop and head out to the sea. Opportunities for beginners surfing lessons exist as well.

After a day in the Caithness county, head to the western part of Sutherland county, Melvich. Park your vehicle close to the Melvich Beach for the night and enjoy dinner at a local restaurant.

 

Day 5 (Approx. 100 miles/161 km)

North West Sutherland

A road trip around northwest Sutherland offers views of the untouched natural landscapes and will create unforgettable memories. Catch amazing sights on camera whilst driving through this area. On the fifth day of your road trip pass impressive locations such as Bettyhill, Tongue and Durness.

Whilst in Durness, visit the limestone sea cave, Smoo Cave and stop at one of Durness’ beautiful beaches such as Ceannabeinne Beach, Sango Sands or Balnakeil Beach for a picnic or a walk along the coastline. Then continue towards the most northwestern point of mainland Britain, Cape Wrath, which offers more breathtaking views.

Astonishing Kylesku Bridge

On your way to Kinlochbervie make sure to stop by the Sandwood Bay Beach. It was named as one of the most beautiful and remote beaches in Europe and on multiple international lists. After your visit, hit the road again towards Kylesku and pass by one of the local famous landmarks – Kylesku Bridge.

You can find a nearby camping ground to stay a night before continuing your journey.

Day 6 (Approx. 150 miles/242 km)

An adventurous day around Sutherland county

Start your morning by brewing some fresh coffee and head towards the Drumbeg viewpoint with utterly stunning scenery. Then travel to the Clashnessie Falls, where you can take a break from driving to stretch your legs or walk your dog before hitting the road to reach the spectacular Loch Assynt and Ardveck Castle.

After an afternoon spent admiring the views of Loch Assynt, travel towards more amazing views found from the hill Stac Pollaidh that sits on Loch Lurgain, offering stunning Scottish scenery. Continue to Ullapool which resides on Loch Broom. After which, go further to Corrieshalloch Gorge National Nature Reserve where you can take a breather of a couple hours to enjoy dramatic views of waterfalls and walks across suspension bridges.

Snorkelling in a Gruinard Bay

If you have any interest for snorkelling, Gruinard Bay is the place to do it! It is best to check further information regarding snorkelling in Highland before departing from your road trip. Before finishing your day, head to the Red Point Settlement where you can park your motorhome and spend one of your last nights of the road trip.

Day 7 (Approx. 300 miles/483 km)

Well-known Bealach na Ba

Once you feel ready to leave the Red Point beach, starting driving towards Kinlochewe and Loch Torridon to reach the Bealach na Ba – a road known for its steep gradients and sharp turns with marvellous scenery over Wester Ross, the Isle of Skye and the Outer Hebrides.

After driving through the na Ba Beach direct your travel towards Inverness, which is 2 hours away. During the last stretch of your road trip you will be crossing areas of Loch Kishorn, Loch Luichart, Loch Garve and Rogie Falls. Take a break in any of these places to enjoy a meal surrounded by impressive scenery.

Return to Inverness

Once you arrive in Inverness and then at our rental station, our customer service representative will be expecting you at the agreed time for vehicle drop-off. For the rest of the evening, take a pick between exploring the Glasgow city centre and its pleasant atmosphere or returning to the airport with a free transfer from us.
